How can I transfer a dynamic site (joomla, forums etc.)? Print

Please notice that a dynamic website consists of its database (sql) and its files. If you want to transfer a dynamic website from one server to another, you have to transfer both of them, following the process below step- by- step:

 - Step 1: Back up your site's files.

Using an Ftp client download the files of your website from the old server locally to a file on your PC. If you are provided with cPanel from your old provider preferably compress the files before downloading (cPanel> FileManager> choose files> compress). Then download it locally to your PC.

 - Step 2: Database export.

Using phpMyAdmin, select export (database). You'd better export it to sql. Select "Send" and type of compression or not (if database is not that big).

 - Step 3: Create a new database to your new hosting account.

Using your new cPanel, create a new database and database user and then pair them. (Watch the process here).

 - Step 4: Modify your Configuration files.

Do needed conversions to your configuration files like  "configuration.php", "config.php"  etc. Use a text editor to open that file and proceed to the changes.
*For Joomla Sites, please change the following parameters:
var $log_path = '/home/account_name/public_html/logs';
var $tmp_path = '/home/account_name/public_html/tmp';
var $user = 'your database's user name';
var $db = 'your mysql database's name';
var $password = 'your database's password';

- Step 5: Upload your files to your new hosting account.

Use an Ftp application, FlashFXP-FileZilla f.e. , to upload all your files. If your files are zipped, upload .zip file an unzip from filemanager> extract.

 - Step 6: Import your (old) database to your new sql.

Using phpMyAdmin (cPanel) and sql you have already exported (in step 2), you can import your old database to your new one.
